Winter Workouts
WINTER WORKOUTS 2009-2010
by Matthew Kirsch
First off I want to thank Aaron Horrocks and Frank Ambrozic for the opportunity to be involved in this upcoming year’s development of our Brewer’s program. The purpose for the winter workouts is to set a foundation and bring to the attention of the student-athlete the importance of correct form and posture. This will allow for future gains to be achieved by way of weight lifting that are necessary for success in this world of athletics that we live in today.
My job as a trainer is to assess the athletes’ abilities and apply what I think is going to get them to the next level into their routine. I find the exposure to issues/flaws in our game/workout is the best way to go about fixing the problem. Along with giving them a foundation for working out, I think the school aspect is just as important.
This winter workout program will have players ranging from 12-18 years old giving me a challenge to push the envelope at a safe pace. As you can imagine the program that is set up for the more advanced teens will be aimed at gaining size more so than the younger guys; where I will focus more on core strength and conditioning. This theory is to help the young guys develop a solid foundation so when they turn 15/16 then they will be well on their way to the Bigger/Stronger/Faster theory of our baseball program. As Aaron’s program has established for years now, I want to help keep that tradition going by improving the programs overall strength and conditioning. Finally, my most important goal for this winter is to give the boys a much clearer understanding of the aspects of the game in relation to functional strength.
